When filling out your student finance application form indicate that you wish to apply for DSA and provide evidence of your disability. If you are already at university, send a DSA1 form to Student Finance England (SFE), including evidence of your disability. Your student support team at university will know this process well and can help to make this a very fast and trouble-free process. There's also a gov.uk webpage to help you at: https://www.gov.uk/disabled-students-allowance-dsa/how-to-claim
SFE (Student Finance England) will then contact you with details of how you arrange a needs assessment.
SFE will appoint you a needs assessment centre based on where you live. The assessor will chat with you in person, online or on the phone and send an NAR (Needs Assessment Report) to SFE.
SFE will review the NAR and recommend your support in a letter called a DSA2. This letter will be emailed to you and include contact details of companies that will provide you with support. You should contact these companies as soon as possible.
If you choose to ask your needs assessor for us F2F Support, you will also get a free session online or in person with a tutor or mentor prior to starting your university course. This session will allow you to get to know who your tutor or mentor will be before you begin university. This is a service offered by F2F tutors and mentors that is not available through other providers. This makes a big difference to students when making the move to university and is something we have been doing for several years. Please email or call us to find out more.
